Roanoke Retail Revisited

The Roanoke Times reported yesterday that O'Reilly Automotive wants to move into the Roanoke area. Last August, I gave a heads up in this post. So the answer to my question posed is Williamson Road, which is where I suspected they would wind up. What else has transpired since that post?

Almost a year later, Keagy Village still doesn't have an anchor, and it's tenants are Ntelos, Scottrade, Dunkin' Donuts and Firehouse Subs. Not quite the upscale lifestyle center Kahn pitched, is it?

Explore Park and Slate Hill? Still nothing, stagnant, exactly where they were almost a year ago, and the year before that, and the one before that... "Rubes, I see rubes..."

Fast Freddys? I knew it would be going out soon. Called that. Gone. A Mexican restaurant, because we just don't have enough of those, will be taking it's spot. By the way you can take to the bank that Lowe's will be occupying the plaza behind them.

The music store never did go into Oak Grove Plaza, but Blissful nail shop did. Don't know how they're doing, but since it's not uncommon to see the staff hanging outside taking a drag, I think they might be slower than they'd like to be.

At least Highlander Pizza has kept up its quality, as I had hoped they would, and they seem to be doing fine.

Nothing to do with that post...I drove by Brambleton Blend two days ago and it was closed. I didn't stop to check out the sign on the door but hope they're just going through some "reorganization" since they now have new owners. Hope they kept the chef and open soon, although I'm a little concerned as no one answers the phone.

Shot of the Week

Hat tip to Drudge for the Shot of the Week...

From Reuters..."U.S. President Barack Obama (C) and France's President Nicolas Sarkozy (R) take their places with junior G8 delegates for a family photo at the G8 summit in L'Aquila, Italy, July 9, 2009."

From Me..."As Obama discretely admires a 16-year old girl from Rio, trying to keep the drool from running down his shirt and "lil O" just down, Sarkozy realizes he has just stumbled upon Obama's kryptonite...big booties."

It's Friday...have some fun...what's your caption?

According to a Walletpop on AOL, here's the list of the 20 Most Worthless Pieces of Junk you'll find in your home...Agree? Disagree? Additions?

Top 20 Most Worthless Pieces of Junk

20. Rice Cookers
19. Shoe Inserts
18. Polaroid Cameras
17. Irons
16. Hobby Kits
15. Tie Racks
14. Giveaway Thumb Drives
13. Trade Show Swag
12. Bargain DVDs
11. Ear Candles
10. Books in a Kindle World
9. Home Theater Sound Systems
8. Ice Cream Makers
7. VCRPlus Gizmos
6. Iconic Breeze

1. Happy Meal Toys

Hard to believe, but other than a couple of Polaroid cameras, I don't have many of these things hanging around here. I don't even know what an ear candle is. I would definitely disagree with the iron and hobby kits, as well as the happy meal toys, which I give out along with candy on Halloween. From my home I would add the Ab Lounger and LED jellyfish aquarium.

The Sketchy Fair

On Monday my daughter asked if she could go to the Salem Fair with her "boyfriend." I didn't think that was a good idea as that place always gives me the creeps. I didn't trust her friend enough to "protect" her, so gave a, uh no, answer. She then rephrased the question asking if I'd like to go to the fair with them. If they didn't mind, that I could live with. My husband asked if he should close up the shop and meet us. He thinks the people there are too "sketchy." I know how much he hates it and said I could handle it. He would remain at the shop until we left, "just in case."

Anyway, I think my daughter was relieved when I told her I didn't think it would be a good idea for her to ride anything with her still healing leg and wondered if she would be able to even walk that far. She was determined so as an extra precaution we got out the heavy duty ace bandage, wrapping her leg over the bacitracin laden gauze pad, hoping to thwart any nasty carny germs. I refilled my hand sanitizer to the top, and off we went.

It was early around 5:30, and there was already a huge line to buy the wristbands. Luckily we were able to scoot around them just in time to get a seat for the sea lion show, which is a new addition. They were really sweet and smart.

I enjoyed it but my daughter's friend didn't as much after a woman climbed up the rafters in between him and another guy while carrying a huge soda and nachos with cheese. When she went to sit right behind them, she spilled the entire soda on them. The guy next to my daughter's friend got it much worse. The woman did not even apologize. If I had done that I would have been so embarrassed and sorry, not pissed that I dropped a $5 drink.

We did the usual walk through, ignoring most of the rip off games and stopping briefly in the animal petting zoo where we wouldn't think about petting any of the odd sad animals. The kids at least rescued 5 goldfish which are now enjoying fresh food in a luxurious pond in my shaded back yard instead of living in a plastic baggie under a counter eating their own poo.

There was another new show added this year, the Colombian pirates and mermaids.

I was more impressed with the high wire act than the kids, especially since I could barely master the tightrope on the Wii Fit. Then there's the usual rides and fair food.

I don't know why we didn't get anything to eat. If me and the girl were alone I'm sure we would have. I wanted to try the fried dough as I thought it might taste like zeppoles but didn't. My heart wanted that candy apple but my teeth ached just looking at it. The carmel corn called me but I thought of the little kernels I'd have to contend with later on. I did notice the funnel cakes are now $6. Just a heads up...Big Lots has the funnel mix which makes 24 and it comes with the funnel, for $8. You won't get the atmosphere though. And that's what makes the Salem Fair interesting, the atmosphere, especially the people.

Of course there's the carnies, that's a given. They are a community unto their own that I find fascinating. I wanted to stop in to say hello to Gloria, "the smallest woman in the world", but didn't. I sorta feel bad about that, but she had plenty of folks visiting. But the real show are the people who go to the fair. I could just sit and watch them and would take pics of them all day if I didn't think I would get beaten up trying to. The kids ran into many of their friends, and as usual, I didn't recognize anyone. I never do there, and I thought it was funny when some guy said the same thing.

I was waiting for the kids outside the exhibit area when this guy just started talking to me. "I lived in Salem for 22 years, come every year, and I never run into anyone I know." I agreed and that opened up the door. He told me he was a cab driver for years. I said something to the effect that I was surprised then that he didn't know more people here. He said the riders were mostly druggies. I wondered how they could afford to pay for cabs then. He said they would try and do deals. And then he told me how one time this girl got in and said she wanted to go to Lincoln Terrace. He quoted her $15 and she asked him if he would take $10 and a bj instead. Now he said the full word, not bj, but I don't want to type it in since some perv might stumble upon this blog after keyword searching it. I thought that was an odd story to relate to a perfect stranger minding her own business, so naturally I asked him if he took it. This over 250 pound pig, got embarrassed and said no, no, no, as if he was too good for her. I said she must have really sucked at it if she was willing to only get 5 bucks for giving you one. He looked shocked. Luckily the kids came right out at that moment so I waved to them and he walked away. We left. See what I mean, the Salem Fair is sketchy, just creeps me out. I still won't stay away, but I'll bring my husband next time...
